IEEE SIGHT (Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology) of Montreal Section invites you to celebrate the Global IEEE SIGHT Week! Join us for the first session of the virtual workshop “Hands-on AI for Humanitarian Technology: Health Applications”.

If you would like to know guidelines on how to effectively apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) to concrete humanitarian challenges in our community, you cannot miss this event. AI is a buzzword nowadays… but, especially for non-experts, many questions might not be easy to answer, such as:

• How can we get started with AI for real problems? 
• What types of humanitarian challenges can be solved?
• Are there any successful projects already implemented in Canada?

Hopefully, by understanding the principles and knowing about successful applications from outstanding experts in this field, you will be motivated to develop projects that solve problems that matter in our society.

Sasha Luccioni, Postdoc – AI for Humanity, MILA (Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms)

Subjects: Introduction to AI and Machine Learning & Overview of COVID-19 projects

Postdoctoral Researcher working with Yoshua Bengio and others on a project that uses Artificial Intelligence to visualize the consequences of climate change. She also leads various climate change-related initiatives at Mila, including projects that aim to estimate the environmental impact of Machine Learning and to analyze financial disclosures from a climate standpoint.

Her work sits at the intersection of AI and the environment; her goal is to find ways to maximize the positive impacts of AI while minimizing the negative ones, be it from a research or application perspective. She is also involved in general ‘AI for Good’ projects and has been working with the United Nations and the World Health Organization to figure out ways in which AI can help tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.

Her work has been featured in various news and media outlets such as MIT Technology Review, WIRED and the Wall Street Journal, among others. She is also a 2020 National Geographic Explorer and holds an IVADO postdoctoral scholarship.

Caitrin Armstrong, CTO at Aifred Health

Subject: Aifred Health, a Case Study of AI for Mental Health

Caitrin holds a BA&Sc in Cognitive Science and an MSc in Computer Science, both from McGill University. She has extensive expertise in applying computational techniques to new domains with complex human data, including work in software development for mental health, and as a researcher in computational social science. She is thrilled to put this knowledge to work and lead Aifred’s development efforts to produce a revolutionary evidence-based AI tool.
