About the Competition:
The IEEE Canadian Students and Young Professionals (SYP) Congress 2025 proudly presents the 3-Minutes Thesis (3MT) Competition. This competition invites graduate students across Canada to showcase their research on key themes shaping the future of technology and engineering. Participants will condense their Master’s or Ph.D. research into a 3-minute recorded video and compete for cash prizes and professional networking opportunities.
Areas of Interest:
Thesis may focus on, but are not limited to, the following domains:
- The Future of Solar Energy
- Artificial Intelligence Applications within Industry or Government
- Cybersecurity and Security
- Radar, Antenna, and Signal Processing
- Electronic and Semiconductor Designs
- Humanitarian Technology
Selection Criteria:
Submissions will be judged on:
- Clarity of Communication: The ability to explain complex engineering concepts in a clear and accessible manner.
- Engagement: How well the presentation captures and maintains the audience’s attention.
- Innovation: The originality, significance, and potential impact of the research.
Adherence to Time Limit: Presentations must be within the 3-minute timeframe.
Awards and Recognition:
Prizes:
- First Place: CAD 500
- Second Place: CAD 300
- Third Place: CAD 200
Top 3 Winner will be invited to IEEE Canada Students and Young Professionals Congress and their registration will be waived. Certificates and recognition will be awarded to all finalists. In addition, winner will get a chance to be highlighted in the IEEE Canada Newsletter.
Eligibility:
- Open to IEEE Members (undergraduate, graduate, PhD or Postdoc or Young Professionals.
Submission Instructions:
Rules:
- Video Format: Each participant/group will create a 3-minute recorded video that summarizes their thesis within the context of one of the above themes.
- Language: The video must be presented in English.
- Time Limit: Presentations must strictly adhere to the 3-minute time limit.
- Visual Aids: Visual aids, such as slides or diagrams, may be used but should be minimal, with the primary focus on the spoken presentation.
Content Focus: The video must clearly communicate the participant’s research related to one of the competition’s themes.

- Submit your 3-minute recorded video via the competition.
- Include a brief description of your research, contact information, and any other required details.
Who can sponsor you?
Reach out your Section, University, Societies, Company, and etc. They may have a funding to sponsor!
