Acoustic Morphology: Elasticity Imaging and Characterization of Heterogeneous Materials
Heterogeneous materials often exhibit spatial variations in structure, mechanical properties, and acoustic response. To characterize such variations, we have been developing imaging and measurement techniques based mainly on ultrasound. This presentation will introduce our recent studies on the visualization and characterization of heterogeneous materials from the surface to the interior. High-frequency ultrasonic imaging is used to obtain acoustic parameters such as sound velocity and attenuation. In elastography and optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based strain imaging, mechanical stimuli are applied to evaluate local mechanical heterogeneity. These approaches are applied to a wide range of heterogeneous materials, including minerals, soils, food materials, and biological tissues. Through these studies, we aim to establish an Acoustic Morphology framework that describes material states and spatial heterogeneity by integrating acoustic, mechanical, and structural information.
